Svenska Läkaresällskapets historia
Svenska Läkaresällskapet (SLS) är en vetenskaplig organisation med syfte att främja forskning, utbildning och utveckling inom hälso- och sjukvård. Organisationen verkar för deltagande i kongresser, utbildningar och certifieringar av utbildningar samt samverkar med flera internationella förbund.
Svenska Läkaresällskapet är en av Europas äldsta läkarorganisationer. Syftet vid grundandet 1808 var att förkovra läkarkåren med hjälp av till exempel utländsk litteratur och seminarier, men också att själva utge avhandlingar och tidskrifter för upplysning. Ambitionen var tidigt att involvera läkare från landsorten och utlandet, men också från andra discipliner.

Svenska Läkaresällskapet (SLS) är sedan 1808 den svenska läkarkårens vetenskapliga organisation med syfte att främja forskning, utbildning och utveckling inom hälso- och sjukvård. Källor till föreningens historia finns hos TAM-Arkiv samt Riksarkivet.
Svenska Läkaresällskapets historia
Svenska Läkaresällskapet är en av Europas äldsta läkarorganisationer. Syftet vid grundandet 1808 var att förkovra läkarkåren med hjälp av t ex utländsk litteratur och seminarier, men också att själva utge avhandlingar och tidskrifter för upplysning. Ambitionen var tidigt att involvera läkare från landsorten och utlandet, men också från andra discipliner. Under andra hälften av 1800-talet började priser och stipendier delas ut. I och med läkaryrkets alltmer drivna specialisering antogs en stadgeförändring 1906 då sektioner började bildas.
Högsta beslutande församling inom Svenska Läkaresällskapet, fullmäktige, inrättades 1969 och består av representanter för sektioner och lokala läkaresällskap som utses och möts en gång om året. SLS verksamhet leds av en styrelse, nämnden, inrättad 1874, som består av 17 av fullmäktige valda ledamöter. Enligt stadgarna från 1969 finns en inspektor för välgörenhetsfonderna och en generalsekreterare för Medicinska riksstämman. Det administrativa arbetet har en verkställande direktör. Kansliet är förlagt till läkaresällskapets hus på Klara Östra Kyrkogata 10 i Stockholm. Huset invigdes 1907 och är ritat av arkitekten Carl Westman.
Läkaresällskapet bestod 2012 av cirka 17 000 medlemmar i 67 sektioner, nio lokala läkarsällskap i landet samt ett antal associerade läkarföreningar knutna till SLS. Sektionerna utgörs av medlemmar med specialistkompetens och har historiskt alltid föreslagit nämnden remissvar, ansvarat för riksstämmans vetenskapliga program och arrangerat egna vetenskapliga möten. En forskningsdelegation bedömer de ansökningar om forskningsstöd som kommer till SLS varje år. Priskommittéer bedömer och föreslår nämnden mottagare av SLS olika priser. Delegationen för Läkaresällskapets riksstämma ansvarar för samordningen av det vetenskapliga programmet och det praktiska arbetet i samband med den årligen återkommande riksstämman. Utbildningsdelegationen diskuterar och agerar i frågor som har med läkares fortbildning och specialistutbildning att göra.
Svenska Läkaresällskapet (SLS) verkar för deltagande i kongresser, utbildningar och certifieringar av utbildningar samt samverkar med flera internationella förbund. Den ansvarar med stöd av en rad sektioner uppdelade efter läkarvetenskapliga grenar, för svenska läkares fortbildning. Den delar årligen ut över 20 miljoner kr till medicinsk forskning och arrangerar varje år den medicinska riksstämman. SLS är tillsammans Läkareförbundet en flitigt utnyttjad remissinstans.
Svenska Läkaresällskapets handlingar på TAM-arkiv domineras av handlingar genererade i kansliet. SLS äldre arkiv samt några sektioner finns på Riksarkivet. På TAM-Arkiv finns tre sektionsarkiv deponerade: Svensk Gastroenterologisk förening, Svensk förening för Otorhinolarynologi och Svenska Infektionsläkarföreningen samt handlingar från ytterligare två. Specialistföreningarnas arkivbildning sker lokalt.
